As part of the European Union’s evolving regulatory framework, the Renewable Energy Directive has been revised: RED III is now officially in effect, remplaçant RED II.. This updated directive introduces stricter sustainability criteria, particularly regarding the protection of primary forests.
What’s new with RED III?
Under RED III, biomass sourcing for charcoal and energy production is subject to more rigorous environmental standards:
- Primary forests are now explicitly excluded from eligible biomass sources — meaning no raw material may be sourced from forests that have remained untouched for at least 50 years.
- The definition of primary forests includes areas that have not been significantly disturbed by human activity and have retained their natural characteristics.
- These rules apply immediately, ensuring full alignment with the EU’s climate and environmental objectives.
Our Commitment and Action
To meet these new requirements, we have updated our sourcing protocols and verification systems. These adjustments ensure full compliance with RED III, while maintaining our commitment to the highest sustainability standards.
At Groupe Soler, our dedication to responsible sourcing remains unchanged. We continue to prioritize transparency and environmental stewardship throughout our entire supply chain.
